Overview

TPC Dorado Beach is where Puerto Rican golf began. Robert Trent Jones Sr. carved the original East Course out of a former grapefruit and coconut plantation in 1958, and it has hosted decades of professional and celebrity play ever since — Laurance Rockefeller's old winter retreat is now wrapped inside The Ritz-Carlton Reserve. The East Course hugs the coastline for several holes and is widely considered the most complete, tradition-rich round in Puerto Rico, backed by a celebrated caddie program that regulars book years in advance. The Sugarcane Course, added later on former cane fields, is a slightly gentler companion round on the same property.

Recognition: #3 in Puerto Rico (Golf Digest, 2022)

Course Facts & History

  • East Course opened 1958 — among the first internationally acclaimed Caribbean courses, alongside Cuba’s Villa Real, Lyford Cay and Tryall.
  • Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s 2011 restoration added ~700 yards, reshaped the greens (Champion ultradwarf Bermuda) and restored ocean sightlines on 12 holes.
  • The par-5 4th — the famous double-dogleg “Z” hole — zig-zags around two ponds; Jack Nicklaus lauded it.
  • Sugarcane opened in 1972 (RTJ Sr.) and was updated by Raymond Floyd in 2005: six new holes, three rebuilt.
  • Chi Chi Rodríguez was head pro here in the 1960s and beat Doug Sanders on the East in a 1964 Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf match.
  • The East Course has twice hosted the World Cup of Golf and, in 2015, the PGA Tour Latinoamérica Tour Championship.
  • Dorado’s West and Pineapple courses closed after Hurricane María in 2017 (some tourism captions still mention “three courses”: only East and Sugarcane are in play).
  • Access is the key question: Discover Puerto Rico says you must stay at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve to play, while TPC network and Mastercard Priceless programs offer limited partner tee times with a ~12-day booking window.
